Imagine a world with no educational limits, where each and every under-privileged child gets to hold the same book in their hands as do the fortunate ones, where the schooling of children is free of all sorts of class discrimination, where the art of learning is considered prior to all the profits in the world. Isn’t that how we have been brought up to see an ideal world?
Everyone has the right to knowledge, whether it’s zoological life somewhere in the midst of New-Zealand, or the latest equipment used by the space missionaries of NASA. This is just the simplest form of what should be the most agreeable notion ever. When we get to the internal anatomy of this discussion, we find that today’s world is somewhat like a carriage. It runs on several wheels. One of the major wheels that it runs on, is the Industry. And this wheel, just like any other wheel, has its spokes, the sub-industries, the foundations that provide it with stability. The most significant among these is the Software Industry.
When one starts evolving in a particular field, it is imperative that they stay aware of all the research being done within that field, to know the attributes and methodologies being used in the new innovative projects. Not only is it necessary for the workers, it is crucial for students as well. Since, they are the major pioneers of their times. But how is it possible? Speaking in the terms of software, whenever a software or should it be said… a “closed source software” is released. Its attributes, the source code is obscured by a license which is owned by none other than the pioneers of that software.
So, how can a person working in a field of Computer Science, possibly deduce the methodology that was used to come up with such an innovation? What if a person wants to work on game development and they decide to compose a Poker game with additional features, such as video chat etc, to make it all feel realistic? Where do they start? Wouldn’t it be easier and less time consuming, if they could access an already developed game and add these features to it, enhancing the existing structure?
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is a possibility!
Open Source Initiative, a groundbreaking revolution in the software industry, marks its genesis back in the 80s, when Richard Stallman, the entity behind GNU project, founded the Free Software Movement, with the sole objective of assuring certain liberty for Software Users. Free Software which, in the present times, is commonly referred to as “Open Source Software”, provides liberty to anyone who wishes to run, study and bring modifications to any given software lying in that domain. The most common examples of Open Source Products are Mozilla Firefox, WordPress, Linux Operating system and Android.
Try to imagine this! A common software engineer who’s area of interest lies in Satellite Communications may, after all, get an opportunity to access and study the software owned by SPARCO or even NASA.
It would be interesting to know that Open Source Foundation of Pakistan (OSFP) has been working for the same initiative for years. Their main objective is to raise awareness on the usage of Open Source Technology in Pakistan and to help our youth lead us towards zenith of technological world. They work with a strong belief that technology can help us customize software according to our specific needs, adding value to indigenous knowledge, expertise and even traditions hence creating a world where diversity will be appreciated.
Therefore, as a major step towards their goal, OSFP has joined hands with Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Iqra University, to host a mega event at Iqra University, Islamabad Campus on September 19th and at HEC campus on September 20th, 2015.
Open Source Foundation of Pakistan is bringing you the first ever Open Source Summit in Pakistan. Open Source Summit’15 (OSS’15) is going to be an internationally recognized two day event which will allow the pioneers, be it a student or any other IT professional, to display their research and projects on an open source platform. The event will feature a convention where various speakers, both from the industry and academia, will be invited to come and share their knowledge and experiences on the development, implementation, and use of Open Source Technologies.
Hence, this event is a must to attend for anyone who wishes to be a part of such a breakthrough in this era of technology. It’s about time, progress came before profit. It’s about time the tables were turned!
